LIGNUM VITAE VESSEL

Lignum vitae ('tree of life)' is native to Central and South America and is amongst the hardest and heaviest of all wood species. It is a naturally oily wood, which means that it polishes well, but its age made it challenging to turn. It is a protected species, and this form was turned from a reclaimed crown green bowling ball. It is this provenance - many years of hard use! - that give this piece its superficial cracks. It has been finished in wax.
