THUYA BURR BOWL
The thuya tree is native to the Atlas mountain region, and is most populous in Morocco. The burr wood comes from the root of the tree, and is typically highly figured. The figure and the colours are typical of a burr, and are usually the result of damage to the tree, either because of insect activity or disease. Thuya wood in itself is not especially prized or valuable, but the imperfect burr wood is highly sought-after.
Thuya burr has an aromatic scent but is a particularly resinous wood, which means it can be challenging to work. It is a relatively hard wood, and can be prone to shattering whilst turning, meaning that considerable care has to be taken. It is an unusual timber and is typically used to make decorative, rather than utility, items. This piece is finished in hard wax oil.
Dimensions: 20cm x 5cm
